Privacy Policy

Effective date: 28 October 2026

Opingo ("the app") is made by Nikkhil Deshmukkh ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to information when you use Opingo on Android or iPhone.

The short version

  • Opingo has no account and no login, and we run no servers. We never receive, see or store the cards you scan or the details on them.
  • If you choose to connect your Google account, Opingo uses it only to send the intro emails you set up, from your Gmail, and to keep your cards in a spreadsheet in your own Google Drive. It cannot read your emails or open anything else in your Drive.
  • Card photos (the front and, if you scan it, the back) are read on your phone. They are not uploaded to read them.
  • The details from a card go only where you send them: your phone's contacts, and, only if you turn these on, your own email account, your own Google Sheet, and WhatsApp.
  • The app deletes each card photo when you finish with the card. It stores your settings and (unless you switch it off) a list of the cards you saved, only on your phone.
  • No ads, no tracking, no selling of data.

What the app does with information

Card photos. When you tap Scan card or Upload a photo, the app reads the text on the card using Google ML Kit text recognition, which runs on your phone. The photo is not sent to us. On iPhone, scanning uses Opingo's own camera screen: it takes the picture, then finds the card in it, cuts it out and straightens it, all on your phone. On Android, Google's document scanner is used by default, and you can switch between the two in Settings. Upload a photo uses the phone's photo picker, so the app only sees the one photo you choose. While you check the details, the photo is kept in the app's own storage on your phone. When you finish with the card (after you tap Save, or when you go back without saving), the app deletes the photo and any copies the scanner or photo picker made. If you use the Google Sheet script, a smaller copy of the cut-out card picture goes from your phone, with the row, to your own sheet.

Card details. These are shown to you to check and correct. When you tap Save, the app uses them only for the actions you have switched on:

ActionWhere the details go
Save to contactsA new contact on your phone, through your phone's own contacts app (and any account it syncs with, such as your Google or iCloud contacts). On iPhone, notes are added as a line labelled "Notes" in the contact, because Apple only allows the contact's Notes box with a special permission.
Send email (optional)A follow-up email is sent from your own email account to the address on the card, over an encrypted connection: through the Gmail API if you connected your Google account, otherwise through your email provider's mail server (for example Gmail, Yahoo or Zoho). A copy normally appears in your Sent folder. Before it goes, you get 3 seconds to cancel it.
Add to Google Sheet (optional)One row is added to your Google Sheet over an encrypted connection, either through the Google Sheets API into the spreadsheet Opingo created in your Drive (if you connected your Google account), or through the Google Apps Script web app that you created. With your Google account connected, the cut-out card photo can also be uploaded to the "Opingo card photos" folder in your Google Drive and linked from the row. You can switch this off.
Send WhatsApp message (optional)The app opens WhatsApp with the card's mobile number and your message filled in. Nothing is sent until you tap Send in WhatsApp.

After these actions the app forgets the card details and deletes the card photo from the phone. It keeps no list or history of cards, except the optional list described below. The rows and photos in your own Google Drive are yours, and stay there until you delete them.

Your Google account (optional). If you tap Sign in with Google in Settings, Google's own sign-in on your phone gives Opingo your Google account's name and email address. Only when you turn on Auto-email and Google Sheet sync, after Opingo explains why, does Google ask for two more permissions:

PermissionWhat Opingo does with itWhat it cannot do
Send email (gmail.send)Sends the intro email you wrote in Settings to the address on each card you save.Read, change or delete any of your emails, or see your Sent folder.
Drive files used with this app (drive.file)Creates the "Scanned Visiting Cards" spreadsheet and the "Opingo card photos" folder, and adds a row (and a card photo) for each card you save.Open, see or change any other file in your Google Drive.

Data from your Google account goes directly between your phone and Google over encrypted connections. We have no servers, so it never reaches us. It is never shared with anyone else, never used for advertising, and never sent to any AI or machine-learning service or used to train one.

Opingo's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. See the Google data and Opingo page.

To stop or remove it: Settings → Google account → Disconnect Google account cancels Opingo's permissions at Google and forgets the account on the phone. You can also remove Opingo at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Settings → Delete all my data also does this and removes all your settings and the email record from the phone. Your spreadsheet and photos stay in your Google Drive until you delete them there.

Your Microsoft account (optional). If you add a Microsoft account (Outlook, Hotmail or Microsoft 365) in Settings → Email accounts, Opingo first explains why, then Microsoft's own sign-in page opens in your phone's browser. Microsoft gives Opingo your account's name and email address, and permission to send email (Mail.Send). Opingo uses it only to send the intro emails you choose, and it cannot read, change or delete your emails. The sign-in is kept encrypted in the phone's secure storage. Opingo never sees your Microsoft password. Emails go directly between your phone and Microsoft. To stop it, remove the account in Settings → Email accounts. To also take back the permission at Microsoft, remove Opingo at account.live.com/consent/Manage (personal accounts) or myapps.microsoft.com (work accounts).

The list of scanned cards. Unless you switch it off (Settings → Scanning → Scanned cards), Opingo keeps a list of the cards you save, with the date and your name, only on your phone, so you can export them as a CSV or contacts file. Opingo never uploads this list; a file leaves the phone only when you share it yourself. You can remove one card, clear the list, or remove it with Delete all my data.

Your CRM (optional). If you paste a Zapier or Make link in Settings → CRM, each card you save is also sent from your phone to that link (your own Zapier or Make account), which passes it on to the CRM you chose. If you enter a CRM email copy address, your CRM gets a hidden copy (Bcc) of each follow-up email. Zapier's, Make's and your CRM's own privacy policies apply to what they receive.

Another spreadsheet (optional). If you choose Excel, SharePoint or another spreadsheet in Settings → Spreadsheet and paste a Zapier, Make or Power Automate link, each card you save is sent from your phone to that link, which adds it to the spreadsheet you chose. The card picture is not sent. Their privacy policies apply to what they receive.

Opingo Pro (optional). Opingo Pro is a yearly subscription bought in Google Play or the App Store. The store handles the payment. The app keeps only the date until which your subscription counts as active, on your phone.

Your settings. The app stores your settings only on your phone: your profile (name, designation, company, industry, mobile and the lines about your company), your email accounts (addresses, provider settings, which one is the default and each one's sign-off), your message wording, your country code, your spreadsheet links and, if you connected one, your Google account's name and email address. Your email app passwords and Microsoft sign-ins are stored encrypted in the phone's secure storage (Android Keystore or iPhone Keychain), and are only sent to your own email provider to send your emails. You can change or clear any setting in the app, or remove them all with Delete all my data in Settings. Uninstalling the app also deletes the settings. On iPhone, the Keychain can keep passwords after an app is uninstalled, so when Opingo is installed again on the same iPhone, it removes anything an earlier installation left there. Cloud backups of app data are turned off on Android.

Notifications. The app shows notifications on your phone (for example "Email sent"). They are created on the phone. No notification service or server of ours is involved.

Permissions the app asks for

PermissionWhy
CameraTo scan a visiting card. The live picture is looked at on your phone only, and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
PhotosNot needed for the library: Upload a photo opens the phone's own photo picker, and the app only receives the one photo you pick.
ContactsTo add a scanned card as a new contact, asked the first time you save a card. The app does not read, upload or share your existing contacts.
NotificationsTo tell you when an email was sent or a spreadsheet row was added. Asked just before the first one.

Opingo does not ask for any permission when it opens. Each one is asked when you first use the feature that needs it. You can refuse or withdraw any permission in your phone's settings. The rest of the app keeps working.

Information about other people

Visiting cards contain other people's details. Please use Opingo only for cards people have given you, and only send messages they would reasonably expect. You are responsible for the contacts, emails, messages and sheets you create with the app, including following the data-protection and anti-spam laws that apply to you.

Children

Opingo is a business tool for adults and is not meant for children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

Information leaves your phone only over encrypted connections (to your email provider and to Google), or through WhatsApp after you tap Send. Opingo only asks Google for the permissions listed above. No method of storage or transfer is perfectly secure, so please protect your phone with a screen lock and keep your app password and Google Sheet link private.

Changes to this policy

If the app changes, for example when paid features are added, we will update this policy and the date at the top before the change is released.
